Strengthening the Network: An FIU and Media Consultation

In collaboration with the Financial Intelligence Unit of the State of Qatar, the Egmont Centre of FIU Excellence and Leadership (ECOFEL) hosted a consultation bringing together Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) officials and media professionals.

With financial crime more regularly reported in everyday news ECOFEL has recognized an opportunity for FIUs and the media to better understand how they collectively contribute to the global fight against money laundering and terrorism financing. Not only for the purposes of accurate media reporting, but to identify ways to engage and complement each other’s work.

More than 40 delegates representing FIUs from across the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Europe participated in the two-day event.

Topics of discussion included:

  • An overview of how FIUs and the media contribute to the global anti-money laundering (AML) and counter financing of terrorism (CFT) ecosystem;
  • Media practices regarding sensitive issues and stories of national interest;
  • Collective interests such as combatting illicit wildlife trade and illicit financial flows;
  • The importance of FIU Operational Independence and Autonomy and the impact upon an FIU’s public image.

This consultation forms part of ECOFEL’s ongoing work in understanding the perspectives of FIUs, sharing best practices, and developing tools to help equip FIUs with the support they may need.
